Bag searches in NYC subways

Mayor Bloomberg announces random bag searches in NYC subway systems. “They should have done this a long time ago…” says one commuter (apnews.myway.com), while the ACLU is gearing up to fight it.

Is this a violation of civil liberties, or a necessary step in protecting public transportation?
