Politics, Southern Style

A tax raising Republican, a Republican Evangelical Crusader, a Crooked Democrat, and a Woman. Sounds like the lead in to a political joke right?

Well it’s not, it is the current race for Governor right here in ole’ Alabama.

Incumbent Gov. Bob Riley (the tax raising Republican) is facing much criticism after a failed $1.2 billion tax plan and the biggest tax increase in state history.

Former Chief Justice Roy Moore (Republican Evangelical Crusader) has made national headlines with this stand on the display of the Ten Commandments.

Former Gov. Don Siegelman (Crooked Democrat) is currently fighting off a federal indictment for racketeering and conspiracy, including soliciting $1 million in cash and gifts in return for official actions.

Lucy Baxley (the Woman) is trying to be the first outright elected woman governor of the state. She has name recognition from her ex-husband, Bill Baxley, a former attorney general and lieutenant governor that made unsuccessful attempts at governor in 1978 and 1986 (after the latter they divorced). Her campaign shtick: “I love Lucy”.

What a selection. Riley is a RINO, Moore has no experience outside the court room and the Bible, Siegelman is a criminal, and Baxley has never held a policy making office, and uses an old sit-com for a campaign slogan.

You just can’t make this stuff up. Sweet Home Alabama.
